Descend 180 meters underground and be surprised by the Salt Cathedral of Zipaquirá. A majestic cathedral built inside the largest salt rock deposit in the world. Here you will see how Catholic symbology and contemporary engineering converged in the construction of this gigantic temple.
Using materials from this former salt mine and using lighting effects, the sculptors created innovative interpretations of the Catholic Way of the Cross that you can see throughout the cathedral. Here you will learn about the creative process and the symbology behind the sculptures. You will also see salt formations and the vestiges of previous salt mining activity. After leaving the cathedral, you will head to the colonial town of Zipaquirá, famous for its various buildings that were declared national monuments. Here you will stroll through the main square and have time to taste the delicious baked goods of the region.
